Hello Friends!! We’ve got some exciting news to share here at Silly & Sweet Baby Boutique: we’ve got a new owner! After developing and nurturing the boutique for a year, Michelle has passed the torch to Angel Derifield. Angel lives with her husband (Brad), her two precious sons (Jake, age 5, and Gray, age 2) and a black lab (Jackson, age 13) in beautiful Victor, Idaho. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the area, Victor is just over the mountain from Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Angel and her family moved to Victor from Lexington, Kentucky about a year ago (Go Big Blue!). They enjoy hiking and biking in the Tetons, fishing the local rivers and ponds, and skiing at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Grand Targhee.

Angel is very excited about the opportunity to grow the wonderful online boutique Michelle created. She has some new and exciting ideas for the the site that we hope you’ll like. You can continue to shop with the confidence that you’re supporting a mommy-owned business, and we’ll continue to look for and offer products from other “mompreneurs” around the country. We hope to use this blog to highlight some of the products on the site and to offer other tidbits and useful information from time to time, so check back often. If you have any suggestions for how we can improve the boutique, including items you’d like to see or improvements to your shopping experience, we’d love to hear from you.

My Second Favorite Baby Tip

A few months ago I blogged about my favorite baby tip: all new moms must purchase the book, The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems. Well, today I would like to share my second favorite tip. It's so easy and so simple, I can't believe I didn't think of it on my own. I would like to give proper credit, but unfortunately, I wasn't keeping track of resources when I was reading up on all things baby when I was pregnant.

So, here it is. When you register for baby items, be sure to include a few waterproof crib matress pads and extra crib sheets to your baby registry. That way you can layer the crib matress with pad, sheet, pad, sheet, pad, sheet. It saves so much time if your baby has leaks or accidents, especially in the middle of the night! I'm short so between being vertically challenged and wrestling with the bumper pad every time I had to remake the crib, this simple tip was a blessing! Hope this helps you too!

Fix Your Disney Princess DVDs

Ok, so this has nothing to do with baby stuff and we don't even sell this item, but I recently purchased one of these and thought enough of it to share it here.

My daughter loves movies, especially Disney princess movies. We purchased Cinderella literally right before it went into the infamous Disney vault. She was just starting to watch movies and just starting to discover the Disney princesses. I don't know how Disney does it, but somehow, overnight, she fell in love with all things princess. Anyway, her new favorite DVD got scratched and she was heart broken.

I researched do-it-yourself remedies online but none fixed the problem. Maybe I'm the only one that didn't know this, but you can take your DVDs to the local video game store (I would assume local movie rental store too, but I don't know) and they will buff the scratches out of your DVDs for $5 each. At the time it seemed like a great deal, or at least cheaper than buying a new DVD, especially one that was in the "vault". But as my daughter's DVD collection and independence grew (along with slacker mommy supervision), she wanted to pick out and set up the DVD player by herself and as a result, more DVDs got scratched. Well, at that rate, $5 a pop didn't seem like such a great deal anymore.

I came across an afforable DVD repair system, the Digital Innovations 10185 Skip Dr. Motorized AutoMax Scratch Repair System. At around $30 on Amazon, I could fix DVDs and CDs (and video games if we played them) at home. I've only taken it out of the box twice and repaired about 6 DVDs and 1 CD, but so far it's working great! Sometimes I have to re-fix the DVD again because I didn't leave it in the machine long enough, but I am really liking it.

So, if you have scratched DVDs and CDs out there, give this repair system as try. If you do, be sure to let me know how it works out for you. Good luck!

A Book Every New Mom Must Have!

I was among the first of my close friends to get pregnant and have a baby. I had very few resources and considered myself one of those people that didn't know anything about babies and not even really a "baby" person.

Fortunately, at my baby shower someone gave me the book, The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems by Tracy Hogg. For someone who didn't know how often or how much to feed the baby or how to get the baby to sleep, this book quickly became my new BFF.

I have since given this book to no less than half a dozen of my friends and recommended it to strangers who have joined me in new mommyhood. If you or a new mommy you gift this great book to reads it and follows the techniques, it will make life with a new baby much less stressful!

Owner of trendy diaper bag company, Maria Winslow, has announced a partnership with the National Domestic Violence Hotline to donate 10% of sales to the national organization. “Business and charity can exist in partnership to make the world a better place,” Winslow said.

Beginning immediately, 10% of sales of Zosephine diaper bags will be donated to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, a non-profit organization that provides crisis intervention, information and referral to victims of domestic violence, perpetrators, friends and families. “We are excited about this partnership with Maria and Zosephine diaper bags,” said Hotline CEO Sheryl Cates. “This project is an excellent example of how business and individuals can make a difference in the fight against domestic violence.”

Winslow, inspired by a friend’s ambitious fundraising in honor of Nancy Cooper, commits money to help victims escape domestic violence. When Nancy was murdered before she could leave her abusive husband, Winslow was shocked and saddened, but didn’t know what to do to help other women in similar situations until she got the inspiration to use her business to help the cause. “It’s still a shock that someone I know was murdered before she could leave an abusive relationship”, says Winslow, “and it made me realize that if it can happen to her, it can happen to anyone. I’m proud to have this opportunity to support the important work of the National Domestic Violence hotline.”

Halloween Already??

I was not expecting Halloween costume catalogs to arrive in my mailbox in early August! But there they are, reminding me that it has already been almost a whole year since my baby trick-or-treated in a Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz costume.

What about two years ago when we weren't going to dress her up because we didn't have plans to go anywhere? But, as luck would have it we decided to go over to a friend's house to help pass out candy at the last minute. She couldn't go without a costume so we had to come up with something quick! We put on her swim suit and cut one of my husband's undershirts into a sash and she was going to be Miss Universe. Well, writing on that shirt with a Sharpie wasn't as easy as you'd think so "Universe" became a much shorter "USA". I can't say it was a costume with a lot of class, but not bad for the last minute!

What's His Name?

My daughter, Allie, is two and a half. For some reason she is obsessed with names. She knows and wants to know everyone's name. She knows all of her friend's names in our playgroup as well as all of their mom's. She knows the names of every single character in her favorite books, TV shows and movies (like Cinderella's mice friends). She asks us what everyone's name is: the cashier at the grocery store, the garbage man, strangers biking in the street - nearly everyone she lays eyes on, including animals. As if that is not enough, now she is also fascinated with who and how people are related. She asks questions like, "What's his dad's name?" (with no dad in sight) or "Who's that boy's grandmother?"

Combine all this talk about names and relationships and I can't believe we weren't expecting her next question. We were driving in the car one day and she saw a dog.
She asked, "What's that doggy's name?"
My husband mustered up every ounce of creativity in his being and said, "German Shephard."
Then she asked, as if it was the most logical follow up question in the world, "What's that doggy's daddy's name?"

Ask any marketing professional and they'll tell you a presence in the social networking scene, especially Facebook and Twitter, is a must for almost any company, organization or even individual.

After a little bit of what some might consider begging, I acquired the necessary minimum of 100 fans to create a username for my Silly & Sweet Baby Boutique fan page: www.facebook.com/sillyandsweet (thanks, friends!!). I'll admit, I am just a little bit obsessed with watching my collection of fans grow; I check it multiple times a day to see if anyone new has become a fan. Silly, I know. Hopefully my fan fascination will subside soon. My shameless begging has paid off though, in less than two weeks I have 140 fans for my new baby boutique - many of whom I don't even know.

The viral effect of social networking is evident. I've gained customers, mailing list sign ups, as well as new wholesalers who have great baby and toddler lines that I'll be adding to the Silly & Sweet Baby Boutique catalog soon. It's A New Kind of Blog!

Until just recently, I had been keeping Silly & Sweet Baby Boutique a bit of a secret from everyone, including friends and family. I wanted to make sure the site was functional and plump with product before I started to spread the word. I didn't want people to visit an incomplete site with a meager inventory of baby and toddler items and ruin my one and only chance at a good FIRST impression, even with my friends and family.

Last night, just before a friend and I met up for drinks, she received an email from me introducing Silly and Sweet Baby Boutique. Although she was surprised I had kept it so quiet, she was really very excited for me. Her excitement was contagious; we ended up talking about my new baby boutique for hours and she gave me some really great, honest feedback.

Although the majority of her feedback was positive, she did have a constructive comment about my Silly & Sweet Baby Boutique blog. BOR-ING! She said it looked like just another page of baby products, and although that type of content is good for SEO (search engine optimization, a.k.a. how Google finds you), it doesn't really appeal to my visitors enough for them to come back to.

So, this my first official personal blog entry. At her suggestion, I'm going to start blogging more about personal experiences so people can relate to me. She said people would rather read about or see a picture of our trip to Sea World's Aquatica, than just a blog full of product - and I think she's right! She gave me much more great feedback and advice, but right now, right here, I'm just going to focus on the blog. So, stay tuned for a new kind of blog with only a shameless plug here and there (like, click here to view the adorable baby and toddler bandanna dress that my friend loved!). ha-ha

"Pukies" Stain Friendly Baby Products

Even though we haven't officially launched yet, we'd love to start introducing you to some of our favorite products.

Pukies products (bibs shown here) were the inspiration of a mother of two who wondered: baby clothing is constantly being stained, so why aren't there baby clothing lines made with fabric the same colors as the foods babies eat? She loved dressing her kids in organic clothing but the bland colors that eco-friendly clothing usually came in were easily stained. So, she went on a quest to find suitable stain-friendly fabric that was available in logical baby food colors and she created Pukies.

Pukies products are soft, yet extremely durable and the line includes bibs, burp cloths, blankets, onesies, tees and pants. All Pukies products are made with fabric that is 56% organic cotton, 37% soy fiber and 7% spandex.

Silly & Sweet Baby Boutique owner, Michelle Steffano, was inspired by her adorable 2 year old daughter, Allie, who does 'silly', playful little things throughout the day, but is also an especially 'sweet' little girl. One of the moms in her playgroup even said, "If there was such a thing, Allie would be voted Prom Queen." :)
